MARKING EARTH DAY 2007

The eyes of America will focus on Hayman this weekend as ABC News broadcasts live back to the US from the celebrated Australian private island destination in a series of programs, ‘Planet Earth 2007: Seven Ways to Help Save the World’.

At 10.00pm on Friday night (20 April), ABC News’ ‘20/20’ will mark Earth Day 2007 with a live cross to Hayman appearing during the ground-breaking US broadcast.

‘Planet Earth 2007: Seven Ways to Help Save the World’ will take viewers to each continent to witness key environmental challenges facing the world and present solutions from the chosen destinations.

As part of the coverage, Hayman will feature in a report on what is being done environmentally in Australia.

ABC News’ Bill Weir will be speaking from Hayman with Diane Sawyer anchoring the special live from New York. He will discuss Hayman’s direct involvement in the preservation of the Great Barrier Reef through a series of projects with the Great Barrier Reef Foundation and will also report on ways in which desalination plants, such as the one operating on Hayman, may be the answer to water shortages.

Then, at 11.30pm on ABC on Friday night, Bill Weir will report live from Hayman back to ‘Nightline’ where he will speak with anchors, Cynthia McFadden, Terry Moran and Martin Bashir.

On Saturday (21 April), Bill Weir will be speaking live from Hayman during ‘Good Morning America’ Weekend Edition.

“Many Americans are saying they want to do what they can to slow the effects of global warming and this broadcast will offer concrete solutions that could be achieved on a global level as well as a smaller level inside our viewers’ homes,” said ABC News Co-Executive Producer, John Green.

Malaysia’s Low-Cost Airline Takes Off

Low-cost carrier Firefly, a subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, has started commercial operations with ticket prices as low as $2.60. Its first passengers flew out of the island resort of Penang, officials said. Firefly, Malaysia’s second low-cost airline after AirAsia, will use two 50-seater Fokker Friendship aircraft.

Initially, the airline will fly from its base in Penang to the Malaysian cities of Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu, Kuantan and Langkawi. From April 13, the airline will also fly daily to the Thai resort islands of Phuket and Koh Samui.

The airline has offered 2,000 free one-way tickets, and more may be handed out if there is demand, Leong said. Passengers have to pay taxes and surcharges. Normal ticket prices start from $2.60 for national flights and from $10.40 to Thailand.

Firefly is a unit of national carrier Malaysian Airline System Bhd., which has been struggling to make profits while competing with AirAsia for short-haul regional routes. AirAsia, which started in late 2001 and revolutionized air travel in Southeast Asia, services some 15 destinations in Malaysia and about 20 in the region, according to the company’s Web site.
